The below information was sent to me via email. I thought it was important to share with everyone.

I checked Snopes.com and even tried this myself. Protect your personal information and remove your phone number by following directions below.

Subject: Google phone number look up.

Google has implemented a new feature which enables you to type a telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and you will be given the person's name and address. If you then hit MapQuest, you will get a map to the person's house. Everyone should be aware of this! It's a nationwide reverse telephone book.

If a child gives out his/her phone number, someone can now look it up to find out where he/she lives. The safety issues are obvious, and alarming.

Note that you can have your phone number removed or blocked. I tried my number and it came up along with the mapquest and directions straight to our house. I did fill out the removal form for myself, and encourage all of you to do the same. Quite scary.

Please look up your own number.

In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to: google (http://www.google.com/ ) Type your phone number in the search bar (i.e. 555-555-1212) and hit enter. If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on your telephone number and then click on the Removal Form. Removal takes 48-hours.

Check your own number and although this may not apply to you if you have an unlisted number or cell phone as primary contact, but you may know someone who needs to know this.

I have a friend in the Netherlands. This information is even accurate for people overseas. People in Canada will have to check as well.

good stuff soli ,with a few minor popints to add .If you have an unlisted number it does'nt show up ,cell phone numbers do not show up as yet .they will show the county and state but not the owner or the actual address.there are several online search directories that do this as well. If you have a listed telephone number in your community the same info that is available in your phone book is available online . then its a matter of a mapping service. map blast ,map quest .etc. I use it all the time for buisiness in town when i am hunting for an address. If you have concerns about it ..google your number , try some of the various online directories and see what comes up if you arent comfortable with that knowledge being out there, they all have contact info for you to opt out on. the main danger i believe is people mistakenly thinking they are anonymous because they are online and then releasing info they were not aware they were. you are not completely anonymous , behave like it.here is a site i often use it has several features and ways of culling various info it has 6 phone search engines two or 3 that reverse lookup , some that look up by address , etc. play with it and see what comes up on you we know who you are I hope this is of some use .

if you notice by the ads on the site I linked to you can find out anything on any body for about 50 bucks even cell phone numbers ,criminal records ,property etc... so its not just google or the sites I showed ... information is collated on all of us everytime we breathe then huge data companies out there are mining it and selling it to anyone with the money .
