Connecticut police under fire for DUI arrest contest

Idiots | Older | Pissed | Wiser

The Connecticut attorney general is considering a review of every DUI motor vehicle suspension in the state, thanks to a report that shows officers may have participated in a “100 Club” quota program.

According to the attorney general’s 168-page report, officers at the Bethany barracks three years ago took part in a game to issue 100 drunken driving arrests for the year.

Unfortunately, that often meant officers mishandled evidence, didn’t videotape arrests as required, or coerced motorists into not taking breathalyzer tests, the report claims.

Additionally, the report claims the State Police’s Internal Affairs Department did little in the way of punishing individual officers for misconduct, despite the fact that of the 500 DUI cases brought forth by the barracks in 2003, only 14 of them were videotaped as required.

Off with their heads. Or jail time.

well...lets see...

i dont agree with the make the arrest quota thing.. but i also dont think ya should be out there drinkin and drivin either. i have admitted numerous times on here in different spots that i at one time was arrested for a DUI. at the time i wasnt sorry i was doing it. i was sorry i got caught.,but have grown up quite abit since then. there are innocent people minding their own business out there everyday that have lost their lives or received devastating life threatening injuries cuz some asshole decided to get drunk and drive. i dont care how much ya think you can handle it. ya cant. please if yur gonna drink and drive this holiday season or any other day this year. have the decency to call a cab or a non drinking friend or yur mom or dad aunt, uncle, hell ya can call me i'll come give ya a ride. (course this is for the ones in my area dont expect me to drive all over the country saving yur ass.)call anyone i dont give a damn but call someone. i love my friends & family and i'd like to have em around in one piece this year and for years to come... not hit by some drunk driver. so if some cop pulled ya over just to make his quota and ya get caught with yur gut full of alcohol then yay for the cop. i say lock em up. make em pay hefty fine. stick to it no plea bargains. cuz the drunks dont let their victims have a chance to plea for their lives. Just my opinion!!!

There's the catch

so if some cop pulled ya over just to make his quota and ya get caught with yur gut full of alcohol then yay for the cop.

Ah, but there's the catch ... "just to make his quota". See, the America *I* (usta) live in, you had to be doing something wrong to get pulled over. So what's next? The authorities kick in your door in the middle of the night to see if you've done something wrong?

Scary shit if you think about it. It sounds kinda like what Nazi Germany was like. And remember, not all the people they pulled over were proven guilty because these dipshits bypassed the evidence collection/proof phase. If these people were drunk, why weren't the on-dash cameras turned on? Because the cops were hiding something. They didn't have "probable cause". Some people, drunk or sober, are gonna plead guilty, and that's what these cops were banking on.

Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

I'm all for getting drunk drivers off the roads. Hell, I drive more miles almost every day than most of you drive in an entire week. I drove 4,500 miles one week which is basically the same as driving from New York City to Salt Lake City, Utah and back again.

I don't want drunk drivers anywhere near me or anyone else. Ain't nothing more complicated than trying to avoid a 15 foot long car while you're driving a 70+ foot long truck that bends in the middle. I say a prayer every time someone is next to me, and they cross the line that's in between us. But not all people that weave across that line are drunk.

So ask yourself this: if you're sober, minding your own business and just going to the store or work, do you want to be pulled over just so a cop can find out if you've been drinking? If I'm weaving all over the road, I can see their point. If I'm not, they don't have the right to stop me.

These cops crossed a line and need to be punished.

quota

I have heard that all cops have quotas for writing tickets. It just assures each city of taking in guarenteed money every year. instead of harassing the public, they should be protecting us.

If ya aint doing nuttin wrong

you wont have to worry about being added to the police ticketing quota. I've had four tickets in my life and been pulled over four or five more than that. everytime a ticket was issued to me i deserved it!

Innocent plea

If ya aint doing nuttin wrong you wont have to worry about being added to the police ticketing quota.

Bullshit. That's why you enter a plea in court. The burden of proof is on the police, and if you didn't do the crime there ain't no reason to admit guilt.

everytime a ticket was issued to me i deserved it!

But not every ticket that's issued is deserved. And ... I've been pulled over for something I deserved but didn't get a ticket because I knew the cop, or they didn't feel like writing a ticket 10 minutes before the end of their shift, etc.

yur bad bud!! and so's the cop!!

Safety my ass

It just assures each city of taking in guarenteed money every year. instead of harassing the public, they should be protecting us.

Bingo! You've seen "weigh stations" in every state. That's where trucks have to pull in to see if they're overweight. So if it's about safety, how come the state DOT workers have nights and/or weekends and/or holidays off? Because it's not about safety, it's about generating revenue.

hey check this out!!
