(AP) Lancaster, Wis. A photo that accompanied a newspaper obituary apparently led to an attempt last weekend to dig up the grave of a 20-year-old woman who was killed in a motorcycle accident Aug. 27, authorities said Tuesday.

Three men charged with taking part in the attempted grave robbery had no connection to Laura Tennessen, other than seeing her obituary, Grant County Sheriff Keith Govier said.

"They never had any contact with her, did not know her or of her until her passing away was published in an obituary," he said. "It was a fluke thing."

Twin brothers Alexander and Nicholas Grunke, 20, of Ridgeway, and Dustin Radke, 20, of Dodgeville, made initial appearances in Circuit Court Tuesday on charges of attempted third-degree sexual assault and attempted misdemeanor theft.

According to court documents, Radke told investigators he brought Nicholas Grunke to the cemetery earlier last week, and Grunke wanted to find Tennessen's grave.

Radke said Grunke asked him to help because he wanted to dig up Tennessen's body for sex, the court documents said, and the three had stopped at a store on the way to the cemetery to buy condoms.

"Just when you think you've seen it all, something strange like this happens," the sheriff said.

Police said someone called about 10 p.m. Saturday to report suspicious activity near St. Charles Cemetery in Cassville, leading police to apprehend the three. Tennessen's vault had been nearly unearthed.

Several members of Tennessen's family were on hand when the Rev. John Norder, pastor of St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville, re-blessed Tennessen's grave Monday night after the site was repaired Sunday by the cemetery custodian.

Norder said the family was holding up "as well as anybody could under the circumstances. It is a tough time for them. But they are people of very strong faith."

Judge George Curry set a $1,000 cash bond for the Grunke brothers and a $1,500 cash bond for Radke.

He scheduled a preliminary hearing Sept. 15.

Attempted third-degree sexual assault carries up to five years in prison and a fine of $12,500, and the theft charge carries up to four months in jail and a $5,000 fine.
